(1) NEWS & TIBITS
~~~~~~~~
---JUST GOT BACK from the UC Berkeley slam, which
was PACKED 150+, Mike McGee rippin the feature,
and touring Chicago poet Dan Sullivan winning the
Open Slam. All on a rainy night! Congrats to the
Cal Kids! In fact, it looks like all the NorCal
slams are off to a strong '05 start... Oh, and
congrats to Sully and Tim, who've been getting a
great response on their tour (6). You can catch
them at Berkeley WEDS. (2)
---OAKLAND slam rises once again from the ashes.
This time, however, the organizers are a well-
known and highly experienced duo with a simple
plan. Oh, and they locked down the perfect venue.
(2) BERZERKELEY SLAM -- Next Slam: EVERY WEDS.
Charles check in:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
---THIS WEEK: Sign up for the Open Slam! Join the
madness, as this shapes up to be our most diverse
field of talent EVER! Featuring Chicago's Dan
Sullivan & Tim Stafford. Dan is host of the Wicker
Park slam, was their champ in '03 and '04, and has
appeared on Def Poetry Jam. He's widely published
in the literary underground, & won several prizes.
Tim is a proud member of the Chicago/Wicker Park
Team. A printmaker who spends sick days traveling
to poetry slams in the murkiest corners of the
Midwest. He runs Skull Brigade Press (a chapbook
imprint for Chicago poets) out of the apartment
he shares with his girlfriend and the ghost of a
small child.
---LAST WEEK: What a strange week! Must have been
the full moon. It WAS a good show, but it was like
wrestling a bear to host it. We had tons of fabu
poets, great features, and a full house. Some
shows are effortless, some take twice as much
work. Luckily, great poetry carried us through...
--In the Open Slam, we had a slow start. Or maybe
the judges were tough. Or both. Wasn't until Dawn's
"Lost Somebody" that scores bumped up. Andrew Lowe,
Kim, and Kammeron kept the momentum. Andrew Love
and Karuna came up just short, but Stephen's "Bi
Polar" helped him squeak into Round 2. There was
confusion about the Audience Choice award, so both
Ahseeon and Andrew Love advanced to Round 2.
--Our features were stupendous! San Jose's Becky D
distinguished herself with a set that ranged from
uplifting, to heartbreaking, to just plain CRUDE!
Crude in a funnygoodway. And Morris. How do you
describe Morris? Surreal? Frenetic? Hilarious?
Enthusiastically received? Yeah, all that.
--Round 2, Suga sacrificed with a sexy "New Year's
Resolution". Ahseeon rocked the mic and impressed
the judges, but a MEGA time penalty in Round 1
held him back. Dawn poem about poetry was enough
to earn 4th, Andrew Love vindicated the Audience
Choice award by taking 3rd with "Crystal Pistol",
and then there was a tie: Andrew Lowe and Kim
Johnson. For the second time this week (they tied
in San Jose, too!) it came down to Sudden Death
Haiku. For the 2nd time, Kim's raunchy humor
prevailed, to earn her 1st Berkeley win!
---TOP 16: Tshaka=16, Lucky Seven=13, Jason=10,
Thadra=10, Chesko=9, Jaylee=8, Kim=6, J-Rich=4,

(6)SAN JOSE --Next Slam: Every MONDAY.
Anthony R Miller checks in:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
---Ill be honest people, i just got home from the
slam and im pretty unsober, but i will attempt to
tell you about the best slam in the bay area that
you arent going to.
---It has just been getting better and better.
Attendance has improved week after week and the
quality of poetry has risen and risen. Y'all need
to get out to san jose cause youre missing out.
---with a full sign up sheet and a full house we
kicked off the slam with two sacrifices from
newcomers david smith and tucker bryan. we hope to
see them more and more this year. The regular slam
featured such local faves like Mike McGee, Erik
Sanchez and Anthony R. Miller
---the whole slam was filled with brand new poems,
brand new poets and tons of time pentalties. the
most notable by lee knight jr. with a 16 point
deduction, ouch!
---After the break was a stellar feature by dan
sullivan and tim stafford from team wicker park.
many regular audience members called this the best
feature they'd seen all year.
---after wards the second round kicked off with
the top five. a time penalty killed mike mcgee
with a new poem in the second round. But fighting
teir way thorugh were the newcomer Maya with her
uber-sex poetry. in second place was kyle houston
who by taking second prevented his girlfriend amy
from hosting hawaiian night in a coconut bra. but
in the end hometown boy Anthony R. Miller won it
with two brand spankin new poems.
---Next week is HAWAIIAN NIGHT!!! oh yes oh yes.
we promise a great time with special features D.
SILENCE AND CHESKO!. not to mention an open mike,
rum specials , don ho and elvis blue Hawaii music
by dj incogneeto and in her hosting debut, AMY the
scorekeeper.
---as usual the more theme oriented you dress, the
cheaper it is. lets put it this way, a hawaiian
shirt is a buck off, a grass skirt and a coconut
bra will get you in free. do not miss next week
its gonna be a helluva time.
---ok so here's the point standings for this week.
the top 20 wil compete in semis in april and the
top five from each semis will compete for TEAM
(14)OAKLAND SLAM--First Slam: THURS, Feb 10
Dahled checks in from oaktown:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[NOTE: this will be the official slam to send an
Oakland team to Nationals --ed.]
---So it's official - the Oakland Slam has finally
found a new home! There's also a new crew throwing
the show but that's a whole 'nother story. The
venue is Oaklandish at 411 2nd St. in the Jack
London Square area of downtown Oakland. That's
across Broadway, & down the block from the Oakland
Metro for all you Tourettes fans or just a couple
of doors down from Everett & Jones (on the corner
of 2nd and Broadway) for all the BBQ fiends.
---Oaklandish (
oaklandish.org/) is a great
fit for the Slam. The venue is a gallery/community
arts space/cultural center and true to it's name
is all about the vibe that's specific to The Town
(that's Oak-Town for the bridge and tunnel crowd).
They're the ones behind the ubiquitous roots and
branches logo I'm sure you've seen on stickers and
posters all over The Bay. Well, if you've ever
wondered what that was all about - this is the
perfect opportunity to find out!
---The show will be each second Thursday beginning
on February 10th at 8:00 p.m. There will be a short
open mic prior to the show and the Slam itself will
be limited to two six-poet rounds. Get there EARLY
to sign up if you want to be assured of a spot on
the list. Our premier feature for the event is none
other than the wonderfully talented and lovely Aya
de Leon (

---Awake at the Wheel: The louderARTS Poetry Prize
www.louderARTS.com/awake---Deadline: February 1, 2005
Prize: $500 + reading w/ honorarium + publication
in Rattapallax Magazine
---2005 Judge: Laure-Anne Bosselaar
---The louderARTS Project is proud to announce our
1st annual poetry prize, Awake at the Wheel.
---As an organization dedicated to uniting the
various worlds of poetry (writing and performing,
traditionalist structure and slam form, study and
action, personal and political, solitary and
collaborative, genre-specific and genre-bending),
in a way that is both altruistic and personally
and artistically evolutionary, we seek poetry that
takes the kind of risks that keep us "awake at the
wheel" - in other words, aware and vibrating to
the world around us. Poetry, in essence, that
saves our lives.
---The poem that wins this contest will be one
that shifts the air in the room where it's read.
That rattles the atoms of a reader or listener.
That breaks through the ordinary in its craft and
expression in such a way that we are awakened to
a new possibility, any new possibility.
---For guidelines and contest details, go to
