The ELYSEUM Writers Wordshop has been going strong now for three years since it started in San Francisco. Every week a dedicated group of writers continue to join one another for writing exercise, critique and community at the Marsh Theater Cafe. The group has flourished in the City, boasting a number of published and award winning poets, novelists, journalists and publishers.

When the group’s founder, slam poet Russell Reza-Khaliq (Gonzaga), moved to Harbin Hot Springs nine months ago, he brought with him the seeds of ELYSEUM. Composed of both residents and guests of Harbin, a new group was cultivated in these fertile and creative grounds, overflowing with insight, passion and spirit.

Now, for the first time, San Francisco ELYSEUM and Harbin ELYSEUM combine for a special reading performance at the beautiful, picturesque Harbin Hot Springs featuring

Crescent Magazine publisher Kristine Anja Page

c|net journalist Emily Shurr

This is one of those on topic/off topic scenarios. LibriVox

Also if you know artists and slam events that are open and cool to being bootlegged, archive.org is the place to go.

Volunteering for LibriVox
(go straight to the LibriVox Forum)

LibriVox volunteers read and record chapters of books in the public domain (meaning out of copyright - sorry, no Harry Potter, no Lord of the Rings, and no Da Vinci’s Code, though we’d love to do his notebooks). Then we make the files available on the internet, for free. We have several types of projects:

* collaborative projects: many volunteers contribute by reading some chapters of a long text
* solo projects: one volunteer reads an entire book (we prefer if you contribute to some collaborative projects first)
* short works (prose and poetry): read by individuals.

We have hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, including a growing number who are recording books in languages other that English. You can visit our Frappr map to see a small selection of LibriVox volunteers, and where they are from.

Most of what you need to know about LibriVox can be found on the LibriVox Forums in the FAQ and in the Guides for Listeners & Volunteers (the LibriVox wiki). LibriVox volunteers are helpful and friendly, and if you post a question anywhere on the forum you are likely to get an answer from someone, somewhere whithin an hour or so. So don’t be shy! Many of our volunteers have never recorded anything before LibriVox.

Before you visit the Forums, you might want to read this guide. The Forums are split into three main sections:

* The Basics (info about LibriVox, including FAQ)
* The Books (where most of the volunteering happens).
o Book Suggestions (discussion about possible books)
o Readers Wanted: Short Works (a good place for newbies, especially WEEKLY POETRY)
o Readers Wanted (where you find chapters needing readers)
o Readers Found (ongoing projects with all chapters assigned)
o Going Solo (entire books by one person ; we request you record some shorter works first)
o Listeners Wanted (help out by “proof-listening”)
o Completed Books (a reminder of progress)
o Volunteers Wanted: Other Projects (non-reading volunteer projects)
* Comments, Discussion, News & Suggestions
o Need Help? Got Advice (ask anything here)
o Suggestions & Comments (good or bad comments welcome)
o Off-Topic (anything you like. knitting. rugby. etc.)

Practically, here is how things work:

1. a book coordinator posts a book (with chapter info) in the Readers Wanted Section.
2. volunteers “claim” chapters to read
3. the readers record their chapters in digital format
4. the book coordinator collects all the files of all the chapters
5. the book coordinator sends the collected files to a “metadata coordinator”
6. we check the files for technical problems in the Listeners Wanted section
7. the metadata coordinator uploads and catalogs the files… working their secret magic
8. yet another public domain audiobook is made available for free!

There are many, many other things you can do to help, so please feel free to jump into the Forums, or contact us at the email below.

Contact LibriVox by email: info AT librivox DOT org
---WHERE: The Poleng Lounge. It's a new spot in
the old Storyville, where the SF Slam was held in
'03. Oh Boy oh Boi they've remodeled the place and
the spot is bangin. Its got a fresh vibe, very
urban, very cosmopolitan. The food is incredible
and better still, affordable. They have this fried
Calamari dish and famous Sweet Potato fries that
are just fabulous! There's a very extensive list of
exotic teas to boot. Plus it is ALL AGES! And if
that isn't enough, it was also named one of the Top

---WHEN: Sunday, March 18th, 2007. Sign Ups: 7:30,
Show: 8:30-11:30pm.

---WHY: To create a forum for creative expression
that embodies the power of the poetry slam
community and welcomes the authenticity and
brilliance of experimentation. We will blend
layers of music, dance, spoken word and all
artistic avenues of creative expression together to
create a rose bud of delight.

---HOW: The format of the show will be a mixture
of Experimental Artists and Slam Poets alternating
on stage. Slam Poets have a 3-minute time limit,
Open Mic performers get 4 minutes. Those who sign
up to perform will indicate if they wish to be
judged or not. Only performers respecting the
slam rules may qualify for the prizes and slam
team.

---THE STORY: In 1989, San Francisco native Gary
Mex Glazner invented the National Poetry Slam,
inviting teams of poets from slam venues across
North America to participate. In '97, Gary handed
off the title of "San Francisco Slammaster" to
Charles Ellik. In '99, SF won the National Poetry
Slam. Marc Bamuthi Joseph took over the SF Slam,
and the legendary Second Sundays was born, the
largest slam in the world.

---In 2003-06, Several different organizers then
ran the slam, and while the Slam Team did well at
Nationals, the slam itself foundered. In '06,
after many years of co-hosting the legendary Baton
Rouge slam, Mona Webb moved to the Bay Area to
study at New College. She met Charles, and they
agreed to combine their decades of experience to
revive the SF Slam.

---FOR YOU SLAM INSIDERS: The SF Slam is certified
through the old venue, so the rankings earned by
poets at Bistro Yoffi will count toward qualifying
for the team.

---The City Slam & Experimental Open Mic.
Poleng Lounge. 1751 Fulton Ave @ Masonic.

One voice, one guitar and the most incredible show youve ever seen. Peter Nevland and Paul Finley explode on stage with the energy and talent of the most original, rock n roll, acoustic guitar wizardry, funky white boy dancing, youve ever seen. These two performers - theyre more than poets - have taken spoken word and the art of poetry slam to new heights, raves the Santa Fe Reporter. An explosion of words, is the quotation of choice for the Dallas Morning News, lifting his arms one minute and kicking his legs the next. Since September, 2002, Peter and Paul have completed 6 tours across the U.S. And Canada and played for just about every audience imaginable. From rock hungry students to fine art lovers, inner city kids to white-collar businessman, no one can get enough of their Acoustic Spoken Groove.

Of course the most interesting aspect to them isnt so much where theyve played, but how they ended up working together. Music and writing was the last thing on Peters mind when he came to the University of Texas in 1993 to study Mechanical Engineering. When he did start writing, his performance was so inventive, bands started asking if they could play music for him while he unleashed his Dr. Seuss took a walk through the ghetto and decided to become the white, jive king style. It wasnt long before he met one of the most amazing guitarists hed ever seen in 2000 at an Austin Arts Festival.

Wisconsin-reared Paul Finley had been hooked by the guitar the first time his fingers touched the strings. At the age of 16, he began teaching, getting a diploma in Guitar Performance from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and joining his talents with the indie band, Mas Optica. Hes played with symphonies, comedy troupes, rock stars and buskers in his journey from Wisconsin to Austin. It was the perfect preparation for the turn his life was about to take as he gave Peter his card and told him to call if he wanted to do anything with music.

They finally played together a year later, realizing something instant and magical in what they were creating. After countless cities, open doors, wowed audiences, bad jokes and 7 CDs later, theyre set to take off as the folk apostles of the most original, acoustic funk machine, spoken groove combo ever experienced.

poetry with the world and to raise proceeds, taken from the book's profits, for Doctors Without Borders. Daniel proves that truth can be
found in the most reductive of poetic structure. Fluffy and elaborate verse is unnecessary when it comes to expressing the beauty and
rawness of life. When asked "Why reductive?" he said that, "People seem to range between dislike and indifference when it comes to
poetry. It often obscures. Readers tend to feel stupid because so many poems appear to make no sense. I have no need to confuse anyone."

This collection of poems reflects the arc of Daniel's life. From fish fries in Mississippi, juke joints in South Central L.A.,
barefoot dances under the Sahara Desert sky, to whirling on the beaches of Morocco to the trance of Gnawa music, these poems reflect
a joy, a curiosity and love of what is best, most authentic in people and cultures all over the planet. The poems are about love, loss,
curiosity, a life embraced in all its turmoil, richness and heartbreak.

Please visit the Ordinary Life in Three Acts website where you can read poetry and book reviews, order a copy, email comments to
the poet, or just watch one of his many dances in the desert on film. If you resonate with what you see, please send this on to your email groups because this is an
attempt to break past the old paradigm of publishing houses. This book is only being promoted through the internet to show that information,
whether it is art, poetry, or news, can be spread no matter what. With the internet, we now have the freedom to share anything we want with the world. - Daniel Roth , posted 09/16/06

So, it looks like the Slammasters have adopted the 3x5 format throughout Nationals, and a no-repeat rule: you can't repeat a poem at any time during the tournament. Perhaps most controversial, the Indi component of Nationals is slated to be removed in 2008.

I personally don't like 3x5, and while it does allow more teams into Semi's and Finals, I feel it diminishes the excitement of the GAME of slam.

A no-repeat rule is not a bad idea if we are interested in getting poets to write more poems. It would make sense to disallow poems from being used at more than one Nationals. But prohibiting poems from being repeated in Finals only means that the best work will only be seen in Prelims, or not at all, as teams "hold back" pieces in hopes of making Finals, only to get shut out.

As for removing Indi's, this is just plain dumb moralizing. Why remove it? It's one of the best shows at Nationals, it's always packed, and it's a huge income generator. Audiences LOVE it.

Why? For some misguided moral reasons? To foster team solidarity? To reduce individual egoism (ha!)? To help promote iWPS? None of these reasons address what I feel should be the bottom line: giving our audience the best possible show.

All the way here from sunny New Mexico, Gary Mex Glazner is on tour promoting his latest “How to Make a Living As A Poet”. Gary is a longtime friend o’mine. We met when I was a wee 16 yr. old poet at a Ntozake Shange reading and he is one of the founders of the San Francisco Poetry Slam. I have had the pleasure of performing, traveling and partying with this man. Gary Mex Glazner has been published by Harper Collins, W.W. Norton and Salon.com. He is the author of Ears on Fire: Snapshot Essays in a World of Poets and How to Make a Living as a Poet. Glazner is the director of the Alzheimer's Poetry Project, (APP). NBC's “Today” show, NPR's “Weekend Edition” and Voice of America have featured segments on the APP. He is the editor of Sparking Memories: The Alzheimer’s Poetry Project Anthology. Glazner is the coach of the Precision Poetry Drill Team at Desert Academy. Glazner and the team were featured on NPR’s “All Things Considered.” This past summer Glazner performed in Wellington and was featured on New Zealand National Radio. The APP recently received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
LASARA FIREFOX

Rolling on in from her Mendo' roost, LaSara Firefox is a long-anticipated feature at ELYSEUM. I had been courting LaSara for a good long while... -to perform at ELYSEUM, that is... She was caught in the process of writing and publishing her acclaimed book, “Sexy Witch” (Llewellyn Worldwide). Now that she’s the proud momma of such a wonderful work, she’s able to join us for the first time at ELYSEUM (-and her poetry is truly sublime!)

LaSara FireFox is a writer, ritualist, sex-positive activist and educator, and designer/facilitator of a variety of interactive, exploration-based workshops and rituals. LaSara believes that the most revolutionary, and perhaps evolutionary, act we can engage in is to become healthy, strong and empowered. She lives with her two daughters and ultra-cool husband in the wilds of northern California.

BUCKY SINISTER

Bucky Sinister is another longtime friend. We used to sneak into the Above Paradise readings back when the scene was still raw and fresh and we were both underage (yeah, that was a WHILE ago!). He went on to run the bad-assed Chameleon poetry reading series from 1991-1997. He is the author of King of the Roadkills (Manic D Press, 1995), Whiskey and Robots (Gorsky Press, 2004) and he has a CD coming out with Talent Moat Recordings.
After a long stint in fundamentalism, Bucky freaked out completely and escaped to the then-underground world of Spoken Word. Fueled on a steady diet of Bukowski, illicit drugs, and San Francisco coffee, he learned to write from poets who dressed like bums but spoke like kings. His early influences are set in the works of LA poets which are combined with the San Francisco Mission street styles to get the sound he now has.
Since then, he’s learned there’s other poets besides Bukowski (although Buk is still his official favorite) and somehow got sober. He still reads throughout the Bay Area and the rest of the country.
LADY MONSTER

So, after the last ELYSEUM event, Lola, Li’l Karma and I step across the street from Mission Control to get a late night ‘ritto. I’m standing in line to place my order and right in front of me are Jello Biafra and Lady Monster! How cool is that? After chatting up a
bit and exchanging info, it dawns on me that ELYSEUM is the perfect place to feature Lady Monster. She agreed so here she comes!

Lady Monster is a ‘Sex Aesthetician’ who is an advocate and activist for sexual expression and freedom. She is a performance poet and dances with Big Burlesque. She has been photographed by Erica Hardesty, Eric Kroll, Charles Gatewood and Leonard Nimoy. She has also collaborated with Revolting Cocks, Jello Biafra, Steve Mackay of The Stooges, Jennifer Blowdryer and the Evolution Control Committee.

KT MICHEAL

My pal, in spirit and in life, KTM is gonna grace us with words exhaled in the true spirit of Love! East coast by birth, southwest by association, west coast by present location, KTM lurks in the background of some place that you’ve probably been. It’s not poetry, it’s not prose, it’s inspired words that will hopefully find their way inside you and lurk in the background there as well. Creator, lover, digester, there’s something to say, and it will be said. KTM is an aspiring minister with dreams of distant Transylvanian villages. Her work has never appeared in anything you’ve read, unless you’ve been snooping through her bedroom drawers, and after you’ve heard her you might want to do just that!

NO TRADEBACKS

When I was born, I WAS GOD.

I was God, and in those moments when I struggled
through sweat and screams and slipped into the cold hard hands
of this reality, I held EVERYTHING
everything
in my tiny
clenched fists.

I was GOD and I held every question to every answer
every answer that has ever been questioned
eternal questions
internal answers
I whispered external
in sweet placental speech
delivered into a world of pinky fingers.

I was GOD
born reciting bibles
proverbs texts and tablets
sermons and psalms
translating truth into myth fables and stories
speaking cosmology in every dialect known to man
and some unknown

And they taught me language
w/ chin tickling fingers and funny faces
goo goo ga ga coochie coochie coo.

I was solving problems
converting mathematics to bone
physics to muscle
biology to blood
I was building intricate networks of
microfillament tinker toy neuro-electrical synapses
and they said

oh isn't that cute!

I was red and yellow and black and white
and all shades of earth
and they held me in front of a mirror
pointed to my soft shallow shell
over and over
Thats you!
Thats you!
until I could no longer recognize myself.

I defied gravity because I breathed magic
They grounded me
holding my hands, cooing
take a step take a step
when I was already leaping off the planet
leaving them all behind.

I sat in the sun
feeling grass and dirt pulse
intimately conversing with trees and sky
discussing the developing universe
and the existential qualities of man
drinking rain and feasting on clouds
and they came along
scooped me up
brushed me off
scolded me

Now look! You peed your pants
You pooped your diaper!

I played with angels unicorns and dragons
made faces at gargoyles
My imaginary friends were ancestors
I danced with elves and faires through
fields of non-fiction BECAUSE THERE WAS
NO FICTION ONLY THE TEXTURE
COLOR AND SHAPE FORMING
BEFORE MY NEWLY OPENED EYES
I was GOD and I TRADED IT ALL IN

I traded it all in.

I offered them every key to every past and every future
to every lock and chain
every shackle of every heart and mind
incarcerated in this prison:
time
and they said
Now honey, don't play with those, you might lose them
taking them away
pressing into my hand a plastic reproduction
they believed opened all doors.

I gave them the mystery of immortality
they gave me superheroes and Scooby-Doo underwear.

I gave them future personified
they gave me a Big Wheel and a Brady Bunch lunchbox.

I gave them hope
they gave me history, I repeat
history, I repeat

his-story.

I gave them eternity
they gave me bedtime.

I traded it all in

No tradebacks.

I learned to see with my eyes
and all my imaginery friends disappeared (poof)
left me
became cold    sculptured    stone.

I was god
No tradebacks.

But you know, I don't blame them.
don't hold it against them
don't judge them
I love them even more
because I KNOW THEY WERE GOD ONCE TOO

and it is so easy learning to forget.

So difficult this journey through life
trying to remember.

A CALL FROM THUNDERING WORD HEARD
***********************************

** FUTURE FEATURE PERFORMERS MAY NOW APPLY!!! **

THUNDERING WORD HEARD, one of Vancouver, BC's longest running open mic nights and the city's only spoken word/music fusion series is wanting YOU as a potential future featured performer!

For those not familiar with TWH, here is how Margy Snyder
from ABOUT.COM http://poetry.about.com/b/a/058743.htm describes the night:

"Thundering Word Heard is a unique venue for collaboration both spontaneous & rehearsed among poets, musicians & other stage artists. It makes Vancouver one of the cities I’d like to visit again & again for poetic inspiration & fun!"

We welcome poets of all genres (this is not a competitive night, folks, so bring out your book-poetry as well!), as well as humorists, comedians, monologuists, actors, prose, jazz/folk/world/roots/rockabilly (and whatever else ya like)musicians and more!

*No matter where ya are in the world, if you're passing through Vancouver, BC, let us know!

HOW DO I BECOME A FEATURE?
***************************

Well, the best method is to come on out to Café Montmartre, 4362 main St., Vancouver, BC (@ Main & 28th) on any given Sunday and sign up for the open mic. Sign up begins at 8PM, so be on time or you may have to wait until the following week to hit the mic! Once you've performed for your maximum 10 minute spot, mention to TWH's host, T.Paul (that's me!) that you'd like to feature somewhere down the road. From there, we'll see if your talents fit in with the feel and nature of the night, and also be sure that you're ready for a 1/2 hour spot on stage! Don't be discoyraged if this doesn't happen on your first visit - there's time to come out and hone your craft!

If you're an established poet/spoken word artist/ musician etc... with a website and audio/visual that I can screen, let me know, and we may be able to get you up sooner!

*We feature folks from all over the world, so if you're travelling through BC, drop a line and let's talk about your featuring some Sunday!

WHAT'S IN IT FOR THE FEATURE?
****************************

As we run the night without a cover charge so as to be accessible to all people, we do a hat passing. The hat goes to the feature performer and this is a great way to gauge how your performance went over with an audience. Remember - we have one of the most supportive and awesome community's around, and people are pleased to contribute to those who shine! The hat averages anywhere from $40 to $100 and more if all goes well!

You'll also be a part of one of Vancouver's hottest nights which looks sweet on a performance resume!

WHO DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH IF I HAVE QUESTIONS?
**********************************************

You email me, T.Paul, the host/producer of THUNDERING WORD HEARD at mailto:t-paulsm@shaw.ca if you require more info!

Rites of Passage, which is produced in part through Peralta Colleges Television, airs on Comcast 26, 27, and 28, and is currently seeking poets/spoken word artists who spit about women's issues for a few upcoming episodes on rape, teen homelessness, women in the workplace, and a number of other subjects.

While we're mostly looking for women, poets of any sex with a piece on women's issues are welcome to submit. You can be as funny, crazy, or as serious as you'd like; almost anything goes here!

In exchange for participating in the show, you'll receive a copy of the episode in which you performed.
In addition to looking for poets/spoken word artists, I'm also looking for resources for writers.

Please submit a piece (or a web address to your work) that you've completed and memorized.
town poets will be melting microphones around the
Bay in the next couple weeks: Boston's Alex
Charalambides, and Minneapolis' Shane Hawley this
week, joined next week by Chicago's Molly Meecham!
will be a silent auction) and features all of the
campus' poetry groups, including CalSlam.
Details: (15A).

---DAPHNE GOTTLEIB: one of my favorite Bay Area
poets will do a rare (free) East Bay feature this
(2)BERZERKELEY SLAM -- Every Wednesday.
Chaz checks in:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
---THIS WEEK: Open Slam! TEAM SEASON QUALIFIERS
BEGIN!!!  $90 Cash Prizes!  And we have a poet so
talented, he's doing a solo feature!
--Alex Charalambides is a Boston College Graduate.
He's the first poet to represent 3 neighboring
cities: Boston '02, Providence (5th place '03) and
Worcester '04 at Nationals. He took 17th place (out
of 60) at the '04 Individual World Slam (iWPS).
He's founder & Director of the Worcester Youth
Slam, mentoring youth poets on teams that competed
at the 04 & 05 Brave New Voices Festivals. He's a
has performed in Slam Venues, Rock Clubs, High
Schools, Colleges & Coffee Shops around the U.S.
---Of course we'll also have hot pizza, hotter live
Jazz, and mm-mmm good Irish beer on tap!!!
----LAST WEEK: Yo, I'll be straight up with you'll
and say that last week was a weird slam.  Over 100
people paid, but we never had more than about 60 in
the room.  The vibe was ODD. Maybe it was the rain,
or the Iraq war dead vigil, or the last game of the
World Series.  Maybe it was the theme: the Dead
Poets' Slam. I don't know. The DPS is one of those
events that is either amazing, or bizarre.  This
was one of those bizarre years.
---Freddy Mercury won it all (a first-time slam
champ, channeled by Murphy), followed by Jason
like a marionette
i let you play me
but my mouth
is well oiled shut
i am made of fragile wood
if i speak the things i feel
while my arms move as you tell me to do
then who's play is it?
what am i in?
what is THIS drama?
it is no more mine
it is yours
is it ours??
i have to speak and say i don't like these things
these strings
this stage
is dysfunct
but i lock my
limber balsa wood mouth
because my puppet box sits beside you
and above it
with your maverick hands of cold gold
dancing my toes on the top
as if to remind me that
one whilm
and back into it
you can put me.
